Paper Abstract:      Distributed applications are exposed to several kinds of failures, however the design and implementation of mechanisms to tolerate failures are difficult tasks, thus an important number of distributed applications currently work with elementary fault tolerance mechanisms or completely lack of them. Besides, modify an already implemented application to add this kind of mechanisms is an unviable task. Fault tolerance mechanisms that can be used by new and already implemented applications are needed and among them, software based mechanisms represent a good option as they have a low cost and do not rely on special hardware. In this work a Fault Tolerant Architecture is proposed, it has three novel characteristics: 1)it is based on user-level modules of software which form a middleware layer between the operating system and the applications, thus its use does not require to modify the operating system of the execution platform, 2)it is transparent for applications, thus new and already implemented applications can use it with minimal modifications and 3)its modular design allows to “tune-up” the behavior of its components in order to study the effectiveness of a particular fault tolerant scheme and/or find the most suitable scheme for a specific application through a set of experiments.
