Paper Abstract:      Many Information Technology (IT) and computing systems exhibit self-organising, adaptive behaviours similar to complex adaptive systems (CAS): they are composed of many interacting parts, giving rise to emergent patterns of behaviour. They self-organise and adapt to changes in the environment without central control or rules governing their behaviours. This characteristic of complex systems makes them more compelling from the organisational point of view rather than from the structural/behavioural aspects of their components. In this paper, we propose an approach for the development of such systems using situated multi-agent systems, governed by the co-evolution of the social and spatial organisations of the agents. We apply this approach to the simulation of online communities.
