Paper Abstract:      Smart cameras combine video sensing, video processing, and communication within a single device. This is possible due to the availability of high performance embedded processors, with growing multitasking communication capabilities. This paper details the development of a smart camera for urban applications. A RISC processor supporting an embedded operating system has been chosen for this purpose. The video processing stage includes an adapted version of a background subtraction algorithm for vehicle detection. The communication stage includes a middleware layer to allow the smart camera to work cooperatively with the rest of equipments in an urban network. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solution.
