Paper Abstract:      Music Uniting Schools, Youth, and Communities through Information Technologies (MUSYC IT) is a multidisciplinary online program developed for children in remote and isolated areas. It addresses rural identity and place through oral history, computer technologies, English composition (of a song lyric) and music composition. A cognitive apprenticeship approach communicating with expert mentors over the Internet is utilised. Research conducted throughout the program identifies particular areas of strength that led to the program’s success. Social and educational outcomes are discussed, short- and longer-term effects identified, and the program’s transition into a pre-service teacher education program is noted.
