Paper Abstract:      The use of technology has become an important part of our daily lives since the prevalence of digital devices and the significant increase in internet usage in the past decade. This study explored whether early adolescents' differences in gender, computer experience, computer proficiency, and daily duration of computer/internet usage at home and at school would affect their risky online behaviors and positive technological development (PTD). Five risky online behaviors were measured: unauthorized acts, internet stickiness, plagiarism, online pornography, and cyberbullying. Three PTD indicators were measured: perceived technological efficacy, technological contribution, and social uses of technology. From a sample of 664 Secondary 1 students (Grade 7) in Hong Kong, the results of non-parametric multivariate analysis of variance showed that participants' differences in gender, computer experience, and computer proficiency were significantly associated with differences in risky online behaviors and PTD. The differences in average daily duration of computer/internet usage at home and at school were significantly associated with differences in risky online behaviors only. The implications of the findings are discussed.
