Wireless networking has rapidly increased in popularity over the last few years whilst egovernment services have grown dramatically. With the benefits of WiFi, there are extra risks as compared to wired networks which users should be aware of. Without any security implemented, unauthorised users may steal data or load malicious code onto the network with the intention of creating havoc. There is particular risk to the citizen of private data being stolen such as identity. This paper reviews wireless network protocols, investigates issues of reliability, availability and security for citizens using wireless networks in the community. A case study is presented to illustrate the issues and importance of implementing secured wireless networks with recommendations.
