Paper Abstract:
|
Innovative educational audio applications straddle a continuum of formal, semi-formal and informal learning: all of these offer rich learning opportunities (Nortcliffe and Middleton 2009a). However, the multifarious opportunities for the learner's exploitation of digital audio as a personal and meaningful medium are in danger of being obscured by concentrating on audio's capacity for conveying the lecturer's voice and its formal use as a medium for providing content. This paper looks at the mobile opportunity for the active learner-gatherer: the student who seeks and collects evidence, ideas and real world experience. Research resulting in scenarios developed and refined through Special Interest Group workshops for engaging the mobile learner is discussed. Evaluation of the scenarios, according to the concept of media intervention, indicates how ubiquitous audio technology can be used effectively and, in many cases autonomously, by the learner. This paper concludes that a creative consideration of mobile audio as an active, autonomous, social and learner-centred tool exemplifies a vision for an extended learning environment for transformed pedagogy, yet poses a cultural challenge. |
