Paper Abstract:
|
It is widely agreed that team skills as well as technical know-how are important attributes of successful software
developers. Engaging students in active collaborative exercises which mimic real-world development experiences is a
hallmark of teaching software design and development using the studio pedagogy. Though the pedagogy itself may
strongly match learning objectives, scheduling and resource constraints may often restrict its application. This paper
describes our thoughts and experiences in using technology to expand the opportunities to employ the studio-based
approach. In contrast to other approaches which use e-learning techniques to enhance the value of lectures through short
active learning experiences, we consider a more dramatic shift away from lectures towards much longer periods of active
and collaborative learning. Technology, namely tablet PCs, version control and wiki systems, was helpful in overcoming
scheduling and layout constraints as well as in enhancing human to human interactions. |
