Paper Abstract:      The role of the mentor is critical in facilitating effective learning for nursing students whilst on practice placement. Placement learning accounts for 50% of a three year programme undertaken by student nurses. Clinical practice presents a constantly evolving environment within which new research and policy necessitate continuous updating of knowledge and skills. It is the mentors’ responsibility to teach and summatively assess the clinical nursing skills of the students whilst on placement. Effective continuing professional development (CPD) is essential in enabling mentors to undertake this role effectively. Mentors are currently required to attend annual events to update knowledge and skills. These update events have traditionally been delivered in the class room environment, but attendance has become increasingly problematic for busy health care professionals. This project aims to utilise the Internet to provide an alternative to the traditional face-to-face update event and to facilitate the development of a forum for ongoing peer support. The initiative will be piloted amongst mentors from a local NHS Trust and evaluated using a combination of online focus groups and electronic programme feedback questionnaires. It is anticipated that this pilot will contribute to the development of a model of online CPD for clinical mentors.
