Paper Abstract:      This study investigates if the Multi-Layered Design (MLD) structure can be applied to a help system and the potential benefits from presenting the information in different layers. We furthermore investigated the possibility to use some kind of metaphor to provide the users with a better overview of how to navigate in the new MLD help structures. Performing an exploratory design case study in combination with a questionnaire and deep interviews we are able to conclude that there seems to be a statistical foundation of layering help information and that the concept with a metaphor is useful. Employing an evolutionary prototyping approach in the development of the prototype help-system we were furthermore able to get feedback from the student group iteratively and achieved a MLD-oriented prototype that the vast majority despite clearly different knowledge levels found very helpful. The overall conclusion we draw from this case study is that it is possible to create a help system using MLD and that users perceive MLD in a positive manner.
