Paper Abstract:      Developing community oriented portals that stay in use after a longer than average period of time is a challenge. Finding a specific portal that caters for all its intended user’s knowledge needs, is a rarity. After researching, several knowledgedriven and knowledge-oriented portals designed for, or around a specific Community of Practice’s needs, it was discovered that none of the portals researched, seemed to have been developed for all of the various knowledge support needs of their intended users/communities. Most portals researched acted as information resources rather than also providing knowledge support functionality/facilities. This paper will describe a framework and a possible description of a Knowledge Support Portlet to be included as part of the specification for the development of knowledge-driven portals for specific communities of practice. The main objectives of knowledge support are to help the user’s or user group to best use and disseminate the information provided to them as well as to aid the users in finding the correct solutions to their specific problems. This paper continues previous research done in the area of knowledge-driven portal design, for agricultural communities of practice, in Southern Africa.
