Paper Abstract:
|
Gaze-controlled interaction is gradually becoming a viable alternative to conventional input modalities beyond the realm of assistive technology. However, very little is known about what makes people experience control over gaze-contingent change in the interface and what makes gaze-controlled interaction feel natural. The sense of control over gaze-contingent interface change is referred to as gaze agency. The experiment presented in this paper explores 1) whether delay between the gaze action onset and display change (i.e. continuous dwell) predicts gaze agency, and 2) whether experience of gaze agency changes depending on whether participants consciously perceive the delay between the gaze action onset and display change or not. Results show that continuous dwell is a significant predictor of gaze agency and that participants experience greater agency when they are not conscious of the delay between the gaze action onset and its causal outcome as opposed to when they perceive the delay or have doubts whether there was a delay. |
