Paper Abstract:
|
Data privacy in the United States fell to new lows in the year 2005 with an all time high level of breaches causing major
concern among citizens. Approximately 130 major data breaches exposed over 55 million Americans to potential ID theft
and varying levels of financial fraud. Target companies included a major data broker, the time-share division of a major
hotel chain, an automotive company and a major retailer (Swartz, 2005). At the same time, individuals are demanding
access to their personal medical information, and health care providers are responding with new Web-based portals to
grant that access. This interesting dichotomy represents the current challenge of establishing an appropriate level of trust
and security when delivering self-service personal data solutions in an insecure world. |
