Paper Abstract:
|
Designing new educational experiences that take account of the complexities of their physical and organisational contexts
is difficult. We investigate this problem through the development of periLearn1, a situated mobile learning experience
designed to support learners in defining their local environment and community contexts. This experience was developed
using Web 2.0 principles, facilitating a socio-constructivist approach to learning by emphasising sharing, communication
and collaboration. periLearn integrates these principles with research on mobile context in urban settings. Learners
construct knowledge through the collaborative tagging and sharing of media that describe their context. The design of
periLearn is detailed and preliminary results from a pilot study of its use by both individuals and groups are discussed.
Initial analysis suggests that appropriate contextualising functionalities within the application can support knowledge
construction. Furthermore, we found that by combining Web 2.0 development principles and socio-constructivist learning
designs in an interdisciplinary manner productively enabled the rapid development and deployment of periLearn. |
