Paper Abstract:      The purpose of this work is to show the differences between a classic WebGIS application and an AJAX-based WebGIS application. For the aims of our paper we have described first of all what a GIS (Geographic Information System) is, paying particular attention to the WebGIS application and showing their usefulness and use for a collaborative project between Tor Vergata University and Protezione Civile of Calabria. GIS’ first aim, in this project, is to help information retrieval (such as maps, meteorological data, etc…) in real time allowing faster time to intervention and better decision-making in natural disaster scenarios. We have created an our implementation of a WebGIS application based on the integration with a new web model called AJAX; this allows us to have better efficiency and powerful performance for our application. Finally we have compared in some test, using a specific tool, our application with the one in use at Protezione Civile of Calabria to prove our guess.
