Paper Abstract:
|
Despite the advance of technologies such as biometrics and security token, passwords are still the most common approach used for user authentication especially for online access. The objective of this study is to examine the password practices of Swedish websites. The password practices of nine Swedish websites (six private businesses and three public organizations) were examined. Results show that Swedish public organizations seem to enforce stricter password control than private businesses. All three public organizations have password length and composition restriction and they provide password setting guidance to users. In contrast, three private businesses accept single-character password. Two private businesses have password length restriction but do not provide such information to users during the registration stage. One private business specifies a minimum of five characters but fails to enforce the limitation. Results of this study highlight the variations of password practices adopted by websites. Hence, users who are concerned about privacy and security should be cautious when they decide which websites to use. |
