Paper Abstract:
|
Organisational structure has been a longstanding problem for organisations and its relationship with information technology has been widely discussed. The arrival of
e-business presents new problems and opportunities. This paper examines the interaction of traditional institutional properties with the introduction of e-business in a large corporation. It reports on the experiences of a multi-national auto manufacturer, focusing on its structuring of e-business to accommodate the new ideas and practices. In order to capture the richness of the interaction, the analysis uses Orlikowskis structurational model of technology. This case demonstrates the emergence of organisational structures through the duality of human agency and institutional properties, the latter showing a relatively high level of resilience. |
