Paper Abstract:
|
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) become more and more powerful and important in local, regional as well as
global contexts. One of the major problems in the use of GIS is the searching process for geographical names, i.e.
toponyms. This is not only the case for different writing systems, e.g. Latin alphabet with or without diacritics, Cyrillic,
Hiragana, Chinese and Thai, but also for their romanized forms. In this paper we give a short account of a design research
project and outline the results in terms of a system framework for an ontology-based name matching component for
Geographical Information Systems, which is multilingual and can deal with various writing systems as well as toponymic
variations. The system component uses a multilingual ontology of toponyms and a set of carefully chosen name matching
algorithms that are applied to specific purposes. The implementation of such a system component will result in better
search findings for toponyms in Geographical Information Systems within and across cultural boundaries, e.g. writing
systems, historical and political settings. A further benefit of using this component will be the easier use of the GIS
functionality of web based services, such as Google Maps. |
