Paper Abstract:
|
As one of the largest distance education institutions in the world, the University of South Africa (Unisa) is constantly being challenged to lessen the negative impact of the distance between students and the providing institution. Using online technologies in the context of a developing country like South Africa often remains unrealised owing to lack of access, lack of bandwidth and the prohibitive cost to students. However, most students have mobile phones, which create an important opportunity for distance education institutions to increase effective learning. This paper investigates accounting students responses to the integration of mobile phone instant message exchange (MXit) into their study experience at Unisa. The action research has found that students experienced this initiative not only as supportive but also, more importantly, bring about a satisfying and successful experience. |
