Paper Abstract:
|
A number of factors have made the development of mobile applications commercially more viable in the past year. We have embarked on a research and development programme to investigate the exploitation of these emerging technologies. Initially, we planned our research around the technologies, such as the different wireless connectivity options available. However, we were quickly overtaken by developments, and realised that the individual technologies were not a sound basis for our R&D plans. The individual technologies have proved easy and quick to adapt. The core to success is in understanding the application domains and integrating the technologies in a usable and robust way; different applications place different pressures on the technologies. In this paper, we will discuss some of the commercial drivers that have brought about the substantial interest that has justified the research programme, the factors that have caused us to restructure our research plans, and the experience we have had in producing our first commercial prototype that provides mobile
order-entry. |
