Paper Abstract:
|
Although the theory of normalization appeared in the early 70s, researches and discussions on this topic are still far from being over. Altogether, it is practically used less everyday by database designers. The possible reasons for this treatment could be the ignorance, the poor interest in fundamentals or the preconceived ideas. This paper aims to prove the fact that normalization is not just a vapid or abstract theory, as many have catalogued it, but also a valid and efficient database design tool. The starting point is represented by a real and unnormalized database that will be redesigned to reduce without loss of information its size for more than 74.11 times and remove updating anomalies. The result can also be used as fundament for database distribution purposes. Besides the advantages mentioned above, it is possible to encounter some drawbacks as well. They are not strictly related to the normalization process or its theoretical support; but the physical implementation can be an answer. |
