Paper Abstract:
|
Online discussion groups may require members to apply for permission to join the group, allow anyone who registers to
join, or permit anyone to participate without registering. One might intuitively suspect that the most open policy would
lead to the largest number of members and the most messaging in the group. Thirty online groups from Yahoo groups
were arbitrarily selected and studied. Surprisingly, the groups with the most members and the most messages were the
most closed to entry. Evidently, the filtering of members contributes to group vitality. |
