Paper Abstract:
|
Driven by complex internal and external factors Universities in the UK are becoming ever more cost conscious. As a
result management is increasingly concerned about the type and amount of work allocated and undertaken by academic
staff. This study aimed to measure resistance to change in the introduction of a workload allocation system at a UK
institute of Higher Education. Krügers Iceberg Model (2004) was used as a framework for the study and a novel analysis
technique (Iceberg Model Analysis) was developed to measure participants attitudes and behaviours. The data was
collected using an online questionnaire. The main results include (1) quantification of resistance with the help of
measurable variables, (2) statistical investigation of root causes of resistance, and (3) categorization of respondents to
change resistance groups. The investigation revealed factors important for successful change management such as
information flow and consideration of the impact of the implementation on the daily work of the users. |
