Paper Abstract:
|
In this article, I scrutinize the Modern Language Association International Bibliography database in order to determine the trajectory described by magic realism. Based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of bibliometric indicators, I trace its passage through languages and literatures. Chronologically, we observe that since the 1970s and until the mid 1990s, magic realism is a literary style almost exclusively related to the Spanish American tradition. However, by the end of the century, this trend significantly changes and we witness its spreading to other countries. Finally, we establish that this twist is not an independent event, as it seems to be closely associated to the decline of postmodernism and to the emergence of postcolonial theory. Considering the diffusion process undergone by this concept, we can state that magic realism has performed a remarkable cultural journey. Moreover, this study shows that the quantitative analysis of bibliographic databases is an effective way to bring new light to the field of literary studies. |
