Paper Abstract:      This study presents the preliminary results obtained from a Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) analysis on production of Sicilian blood oranges (cv. Tarocco) which, are always appreciated for their well-known qualities (functional and not). They are becoming more difficult to find on the Italian market because of their higher wholesale price. They cannot compete with citrus fruit coming from other countries. It is because of this reason that we applied LCI to exploit the available resources more sensibly, reduce power consumption and limit the environmental impact of the whole production cycle. This can also result in greener production so that the product can be eco-labelled, qualifying to be sold for a premium price to green customers. This approach focuses on resource consumption and emissions produced during the life cycle of the oranges allocated to specific categories based on potential environmental impacts attributable. We defined a suitable functional unity of 1 ton of oranges and inventory data has been collected for all phases of the product’s life cycle
