Paper Abstract:
|
This paper is premised on the notion that collaboration, communities of practice, and knowledge sharing are human-to-human processes. The essential facet of collaboration is the social interaction in which knowledge is an outcome of people sharing experiences. When information systems practitioners interact with others and their environment, there is a shift in knowledge due to the social interaction. Consequently, knowledge sharing is a social process which occurs during and when there is an interaction among individuals. In a typical South African organization, practitioners, because of their mobility, perform tasks in varied locations or contexts. Tasks are presumed to be constant but a mobile practitioner carries them in different environments. This paper argues that as information systems practitioners move across different contexts, they use awareness of context and social presence to share their experiences or to engage in a collaborative activity. The paper posits that knowledge sharing and personalized support decisions and actions are influenced by awareness, as mobile practitioners traverse varied contexts. The paper concludes that South African information systems practitioners awareness of a social presence and context facilitates ubiquitous personalized support and on-demand sharing of knowledge. |
