Paper Abstract:
|
The technological progress in the field of mobile devices, aiming at the integration of a maximum number of different functions, has led to high availability of mobile devices such as cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDA) as well as notebooks or tablet PCs among the population. These factors challenge educational institutions to develop appropriate concepts and applications for educational issues. The range of learning content of different kinds is growing. Many publishers offer multimedia-based courses, including video clips, electronic textbooks, multimedia reference books etc. for mobile training on mobile devices, most of them including an online update service. In dentistry, the commercial software Dental Explorer 3D is an ideal tool for chairside patient education and treatment planning due to the impressive visualization of individual patient findings and descriptions of all restorative and prosthetic treatment types. Dental Explorer 3D visualizes dental knowledge and treatment planning directly at chairside. The use of video sequences considerably enhances the effectiveness of learning modules for education in medicine and dentistry for students, physicians and patients. The multilingual Glossary of Dental Medicine (GLODMED) serves as a thesaurus and has been realized as an iPad application. This compilation with about 15,000 terms is the basis for further projects and provides an important prerequisite for semantic web search within dentistry. |
