Paper Abstract:      In today's world, social media has become an integral part of our social life. Social media is seen as a communication and interacting platform that could be utilized to enhance our connectivity, research, and learning. In recent years, its usage has increased dramatically among the youth and young adults, particularly students being the primary users of social media. With excessive use and a high number of students spending time online, raises the question whether excessive use of social media can affect academic performance. This research therefore investigates the use of social media networking sites and related impact on student academic performance. The study further explores which social media network is the most popular amongst South African university students. A questionnaire survey method was administered to undergraduates at South African University during 2019 academic year. One hundred students participated in the study and the data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 27. The findings show the negative impact of social media use on student academic performance and also underlines the need to control and manage social media use in academic settings
