Paper Abstract:      With the increased number of students taking online courses it is essential to identify instructional strategies that are effective to increase student engagement in course content. This study examines student engagement as measured by the student discourse regarding course content and changes in student discourse after the addition of video and audio content to the course. The study took place over two semesters of an online graduate course in mathematics, science and technology with two cohorts (n=17 and n=20) of students. Future studies will continue the examination of student discourse in the online environment with larger samples.
