Paper Abstract:      In this paper we present the outcomes of an analysis of existing interactive map interfaces so as to learn more about the way in which their communication components are allocated in their design. The information obtained is representative of those aspects of the interfaces which are required for communication. The main issue involved in this investigation concerns the diversity of both applications and users’ profiles, which in turn constitutes the greatest challenge of interface design of cartographic interactive environments. In such interfaces, the map consists of communication elements, static elements of computer graphic design, and command elements, which together enable users to interact with the available functions within the map.
