Paper Abstract:
|
This study uses computer-mediated discourse analysis to study the relationship between instructor online facilitation and the levels of student knowledge construction during online asynchronous discussions. Categories of instructor facilitation and student knowledge construction moves were established qualitatively, and analyzed statistically through chi-square tests of independence. The results show that knowledge construction involved multiple inter-related stages. Discourse moves associated with lower levels of knowledge construction were necessary building blocks for advanced knowledge construction discourse moves. This was best supported with the simultaneous use of Direct Instruction and Facilitate Discourse. Implications for instructor facilitation of online learning are discussed. |
