Paper Abstract:      Mobile IPv6 has been proposed to provide mobility functions for portable devices. Nevertheless, it is not an efficient protocol to solve the intra-domain handoff problems. Micro-mobility protocols are proposed to address the problems in Mobile IP. However, a number of limitations still need to be addressed on the existing micro-mobility protocols: Latency and packet loss. In this paper, HMIPv6 is investigated to explore the possibility of improving its performance. Registration is the main component to cause the latency during handoff. Although, the anticipated handoff technique reduces the registration time, it has limitations in predicting the future movements of MN. In this paper, an embedded movement detection mechanism is proposed and investigated as a solution to the problems. A series of experiments were carried out to demonstrate various impacts on the performance. The results are compared between HMIP and the proposed technique. It was found that the proposed technique gives promising results.
