Paper Abstract:      To promote the user-centered design of autonomous transportation systems a holistic integrated approach is required. We introduce a human factors engineering (HFE) program that provides guidance to the accomplishment of HF activities throughout the design process. The program consists of nine activities that can be performed in an iterative fashion. Here we present how main HFE activities have to be executed in order to promote the user-centered design of smart autonomous trams. Lessons learned from the ongoing SmartRail project and from some of our earlier projects have been identified and discussed.
