Paper Abstract:
|
Desirable and undesirable effects of GPS navigational units are presented, followed by a discussion of the anticipated
impact of this new technology on society. GPS technology has been publicly available since 1983. Recently the price has
come down to a level at which they are becoming popular among consumers. As with other technology introduced to
society, GPS will have an effect on the People, Tasks, and Structure of daily activities. This field study reveals pros and
cons of particular device features and the resulting interaction with the surrounding environment; as well as the
anticipated future impact on society as this technology becomes pervasive. |
