Paper Abstract:
|
This proposed contribution discusses to what extent the choice of particular video games mirrors a players personality with gaming motivations as an intermediate variable. Based on an online survey (n=1612) we first confirm the applicability of the five-factor (OCEAN) model on personality types in a German speaking gamers context. Gaming motivation is then introduced as a psychological concept contrasting motives and incentives. A recent empirical study by Yee on gaming motivations with a US perspective is generally replicated with our sample. Motivations are analogously derived from a principal component analysis of over 40 items referring to diverse aspects of gaming motivations. A cluster analysis suggests clusters of motivations that could in turn be correlated with specific personality aspects. Furthermore, with certain motivational footprints and gamer personalities respectively certain games are favoured. Knowing particularly enticing combinations of motivations met may guide the development of future games targeting specific personalities. |
