Paper Abstract:      This paper is focused on the quality of service assurance in data networks. However, it does not analyze the well-known QoS methods working on the network layer like IntServ and DiffServ technology. It is rather about searching methods for QoS assurance that would enable better cooperation between the end application and the technology of quality of service assurance. The end user of the IntServ and DiffServ technologies has not got many possibilities how to influence the resulting parameters of network traffic. The user or the application working on the end station demands certain parameters of the network traffic but the main decision about the provision of network resources is up to the edge network component. The aim of this paper is to search for QoS methods that would assure greater possibilities for the end application when defining and reaching the required network parameters. This article is centred on the assurance of QoS via mechanisms that are part of the operating system Microsoft Windows XP. The Windows XP operating system offers the possibility of assuring QoS on both the network and the link layer of the ISO/OSI reference model. The Traffic Control Monitor application is analyzed in detail. It enables setting the QoS parameters for concrete data flows. In conclusion, possibilities of using the Windows XP QoS mechanisms as the basis for new QoS assurance methods will be mentioned.
