Paper Abstract:      The Federal Institutions of Education, Science and Technology (FI) are higher education institutions, specializing in the offer of professional and technical education available in Brazil. The FI network has expanded and has today reached a total of around 333 units. The aim of this work has been to identify the environmental sustainability of the FI and to propose guidelines towards supporting action, steps and policies of sustainability. To achieve this, through the revision of a bibliography, the research was developed from the following: selection of indexes to measure sustainability in the FI and to elaborate a Web tool to apply the questionnaire; tables and analyses of data by region and indication; proposals for action for improving environmental performance for the FI. The survey of environmental sustainability of FI reached a national level and revealed a high level of environmental activity in teaching, research and extension. There still lacks a lot of initiative in activities related to the campus, which need to be incorporated. In general, the activities observed during the research have been shown to be relevant and vary according to the region in which they apply.
