Paper Abstract:      He hybrid innovation model with in the open source software development context has been in play for some years. Many literature reveal that the open source approach creates an environment conducive for harnessing innovation and creativity. However, little has been done, particularly by way of a detailed case study, about the antecedents essential for innovation to happen in such environments. This empirical work analyzes an exemplary hybrid open source software project called Varnish in view of addressing this literature gap. It is found out that innovation very well happens in such hybrid projects as they bring the users, the developers, the firm and all the stakeholders together. It is also manifested that creativity and innovation is a function of multiple factors including personal, managerial and environmental traits spurred by the very nature of open source projects and peer production features. The systematic identification and presentation of the various factors is believed to be useful for managers and practitioners to attend to them as required. Theoretically it shows how features of peer production, open source and hybrid models link together resulting in innovation.
