Paper Abstract:
|
Ontology provides semantics and systematized knowledge for intelligent systems. The richer the contents of ontologies, the more intelligent are the semantics that can be used by the systems. Therefore, extending the existing ontologies is an important task for developing intelligent systems. This paper proposes a method for extending ontologies based on comparison between the conceptual structures of an existing ontology by focusing on sibling concepts. Further, modification candidates for extending the ontology according to the differences between the sibling concepts are proposed. The basic idea is that sibling concepts can have similar semantics. As a qualitative evaluation, we applied the ontology extension method to bioscience ontology, which was developed based on the thesaurus developed by the Japan Science and Technology Agency. As a result, some ontology extension examples were obtained and evaluated as useful proposals by bioscience experts and thesaurus managers. This suggested that this method can contribute to the extension of ontologies by the addition of richer content. |
