Paper Abstract:
|
There is no doubt that the exponential growth of digital technologies has affected the modus operandi of the individual, communities and institutions. We pose that the dynamics of change is of such magnitude and depth that many of the phenomena generated in the process of adopting these technologies have not been studied with sufficient breadth and critical analysis. On the one hand, the seductive and glamorous nature of digital devices, systems and applications has managed to capture the attention of users who acquire an increasing dependence on the functionalities that the digital world offers in relation to efficiency, agility and immediacy for developing an increasing number of human activities. On the other hand, the intense competition between the dominant incumbents of the digital world, makes the pace of innovation unstoppable. Given the overwhelming and fast-paced nature of this scenario, it is essential to understand and reflect on the implications of technology-society interactions in order to take full advantage of the potential benefits of digitization for social progress and community wellbeing. The objective of this contribution is to identify some of the implications of greater influence and relevance, which in turn require immediate and urgent attention. We recommend preliminary steps to structure comprehensive frameworks to understand such implications in order to develop strategies and policies for the adoption of digitization in a balanced and comprehensive manner. |
