Paper Abstract:
|
Many serious games for education only use exogenous fantasies for the design of serious games for educational games. In such games the learning content can easily be replaced by any other content, as the game design is completely separate from the content design. While this is very efficient from an economic point of view, as existing game designs can be reused, it might hurt the effectiveness of serious games in regards to motivation and learning outcome. In this paper we suggest a study design to measure this effect. For this two serious games teaching the basics of SQL are designed. One of them is a quiz game, where the content is easily interchangeable, whilst the other intertwines gameplay and mechanics more tightly. A comparative study is suggested, which evaluates both games in regards to their effectiveness in boosting motivation and teaching subject knowledge. |
