Paper Abstract:
|
The research presents an evaluation of two buildings of the University of Passo Fundo (UPF), Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil, with the aim of increasing the responsibility of universities to embrace sustainable development and to further include the principles of sustainable construction and eco-efficiency in the physical structures of Higher Education Institutions (HEI). The main aim of this work is to evaluate energy and thermal performance in University buildings and their inter-relation with the comfort of the users, proposing guidelines to include or increase the eco-efficiency of the planning of university buildings. On the campus, the study was developed in the buildings of the faculties of Engineering and Architecture, representative of various construction types which can be found on Campus I, taking into consideration their architectonic and construction aspects, installations and respective established use and occupation; by monitoring energy consumption it was possible to compare the energy performance of both buildings. Regarding the thermal performance, simulations were developed, using the software DesignBuilder, which was also used for evaluating the comfort of the users. The results have made it possible to identify the positive and negative points about the two buildings, leading to the formation of proposals of strategies inserted in an operative instrument for improving the performance of the two buildings and serving as a reference to also incorporate eco- efficiency in new buildings and campuses. This study can be adopted as a reference for evaluation studies of building stock in other HEI, progressively incorporating the criteria of eco-efficiency in the locations in a way which can ensure appropriate space and satisfactory living/working conditions of the users. |
