Paper Abstract:      There are many dimensions (social, cultural, technological, etc.) that compound the problems existing among the Deaf communities in Brazil: lack of education, geographic distances, etc. These deficits are detrimental to the development of the Deaf culture. Most of these issues can be attributed to language barrier (e.g. prejudice, late acquisition, lack of knowledge, lack of standards, among others) and lack of technological artifacts. The Internet, and the WWW are powerful tools to bridge some of these gaps. In order to aid the Deaf community in their knowledge creation needs, a Internet-based Collaborative Consensus and Knowledge Creation process was designed and tested in a Community of Practice centered at Brazilian Sign Language Studies. Results showed a high degree of efficiency at addressing the issues: a) increase in consensus for knowledge creation in Sign Language b) discussion on the correct form of signs, by exploration, learning and fixation of knowledge regarding the phonology and social aspects c) cultivation of a Community of Practice d) empowerment of the Deaf community to create knowledge.
