Paper Abstract:
|
This paper reports on research done with news apps on multi-touch tablets which are based on a conceptual design model derived from another platform. The research focuses on the user experience with this conceptual design model and asks how the design model influences the user experience. The findings are interpreted within the notion of genre theory, which seems to be a relevant model for explaining essential aspects of the rich user experience. The findings show, that from the users experience point of view the models are not adequate to be used as metaphorical model for explaining the use of the apps content and functionality. Moreover, the inadequate conceptual model misleads the users mental model building during the interaction process and prevent users from initially figure out the functionality of the tablet platform. In a wider relevance the findings suggest some conclusions also for the user experience in responsive web design contexts, where accommodations to different platforms are generated. Although these adaptations will provide comfortable technical solutions eliminating the need for different designs and developments for each new device on the market, they may have implications for rich user experience and even have a potential for causing interaction problems. This is because the conceptual model is often not sufficient or even misleading in order to provide the user with a sufficient working model (mental model) during interaction by explaining the functionality to the user. |
