Paper Abstract:
|
This paper describes the effects of using a handheld device (a Nintendo DS) for training students in the use of Kanji characters (the Chinese characters used in Japan) in a blended learning environment. The main emphasis is on its effects on students in special needs education at a Japanese elementary school. In face-to-face lessons lasting about five months, six students affected by ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) studied the reading, writing, stroke count, and stroke order of Kanji characters using a Nintendo DS; on which Kanji software was installed. Consequently, the academic performance of all the students improved. However, it was noted that some students became rather obsessive about their own levels of performance. |
