Paper Abstract:      In order to offer a high quality educational experience to their students, universities need to capitalise on the existing knowledge by encouraging much better knowledge sharing practices among teachers across individual courses, departments, disciplines and organisational boundaries. There is strong evidence, coming from the knowledge management field, that communities of practice (CoP) enable organisations to build, share and apply deep level of competence and utilise the knowledge they already have. The main objective of this paper is to further explore the concept of CoP related to university teaching and critically analyse the role of educational technologies in terms of their possible support for these CoPs. The paper describes a new type of knowledge management, educational technology, which coupled with teaching CoP, could enable teachers to share and reuse their innovative teaching practices. Design of this technology follows the latest developments in the area of educational technology, namely the Learning Design theory. This theory aims to address the shortcomings of the existing educational technologies and give directions for the new developments in this area.
