Paper Abstract:      E-waste is a global problem. India is the fifth biggest producer of e-waste in the world. A large part of the e-waste is not disposed in a proper manner increasing the risk of environmental and health hazards. This research studied (a) the awareness of e-waste and its consequences and (b) the disposal behaviour of e-waste amongst Indian households by conducting a survey in two cities of India (Delhi the capital city and Jamshedpur an industrial city). Though the study found significant differences in possession and knowledge of e-waste and its negative consequences between the cities, the disposal pattern of the two cities was similar with most of the households storing the e-waste in the house. E-waste stored in the house has a high possibility of ending up with unorganized recyclers (who use crude methods to dismantle) in the future. A three-pronged strategy to develop the necessary infrastructure, education and collection is suggested.
