Paper Abstract:
|
This paper articulates a conceptual framework for understanding e-commerce adoption factors in small and medium-sized enterprises in the context of developing countries. The premise of the framework is anchored on interpretive philosophy to capture holistic and socio-technical nature of e-commerce adoption. The paper reviews e-commerce adoption literature and proposes six areas of consideration to determine e-commerce adoption in SMEs. These areas are: the nature and characteristic of the e-commerce business environment, the use of ICT and e-commerce knowledge, managerial characteristics and their perception of e-commerce adoption, factors affecting e-commerce adoption, the interaction of factors and the extent of e-commerce adoption, and the role of the local business environment. A suggestion is provided for the application of the framework in interpretive paradigm in Botswana SMEs, also applicable to other global context. |
