Paper Abstract:      The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of self tests in supporting student in an online learning environment. This short paper examines the online learning assessment experience of students and focuses on the use of basic level assessment strategies in online learning. It describes the different approaches that can be adopted by developers of online courses. It presents the preliminary findings of the two different approaches taken to maximise staff efficiency and encourage student led learning. It underlines the importance of self tests and quizzes in e-learning by identifying a correlation between mandatory self tests and student performance and attitude toward learning. The paper finally concludes by providing plans for future work.
