Paper Abstract:      In this paper the results are presented of the e-Archive project. The e-Archive project is a digital preservation research project that was jointly undertaken by the Universities of Delft, Utrecht and Maastricht. During the project an experimental electronic archive (reference implementation) was designed and developed. The current reference implementation provides the heart of a robust web-enabled production environment for the actual storage and the retrieval. New provisions for newly developed workflows, especially for the ingest of new documents and collections, including the elicitation of metadata, are foreseen. The collective further development of a network of institutional repositories in the Netherlands also raises new challenges for these organisations. The project adopted the OAIS reference model and designed and implemented XML “containers” as storage structure. Stored objects must be rendered by so called viewers. These have to be provided, as well. The need for preservation services for data sets and programs is explained. The viewer concept is explained and related to the importance of the use of open source software while building an electronic archive.
